Dodgers Forum: Message to Ron Rizzi (Dodgers scout in Venezuela)

My friend, it is indeed a great pleasure writing this note to you. I am sorry I am using this way but I could not get through your personal e-mail.
It has been almost six months since the last time I saw you in the ballpark in Caracas. I can not forget your kindness when you got for my son Alejandro the baseball signed by Patrick Lannon and Robert Straton. He keeps it in a very safe place and always remembers you.
As you are probably informed, very sad things have happened and continue occuring in Venezuela since your departure. Starting on December 2nd, 2002 the country went on a civil general strike in order to force Chavez to resign to the presidency.
As you can imagine, the whole oil industry joined the civil strike, which ended up by mid Febraury. (Not even the baseball season could finish up and due to this, Venezuela for the first time in modern history, could not send a baseball team to the Serie del Caribe).
Chavez was in serious troubles during those two months because the oil industry was totally paralized and this company represents more than 80% of the GNP of Venezuela. Then, as a retaliatory act against the people of the industry, Chavez fired more than 20.000 people from it, including myself.
Although I am currently going through a difficult financial situation, I am very confident that this communist President will not last much longer in the position, the whole decent Venezuelan society will soon recover its dignity and that we all will get our jobs back within the oil indusrty.
Well Ron, I hope this shall be a great year for the LA Dodgers and wishing you also the greatest luck in your job.
I look forward to seeing you soon (probably by the beginning of the 2003 - 2004 baseball season in Venezuela).

Best regards,

Hector Aponte
