Baseball Forum: 1920 Braves
Posted by: T.R. (Ridlbauer@ThisIsToPreventSpam-770-RemoveThis.aol.com) on 7 Sep 2003 at 12:02:16 AM A day or 2 later in 1920, the braves had a pitcher that pitched a 19 inning game. The dodgers pitcher also went 19 innings. The braves won 2-1. The dodgers pitcher's name was Sherrod Smith. The braves pitcher's name was Dana Fillingim,(my great uncle). The game was played May 3rd 1920 in Boston. Dana allowed 12 hits, walked 4, and struck out 4. As a matter of fact, in december of 1920 both leagues made it legal for spitball pitchers to throw the spitball. Dana Fillingim was one of those. He played for the braves from 1918-1923.I'm not sure if Fillingim & Smith are in the record books for innings pitched in a game, but should be.
